Elemental Totems
Look at the model in Sketchfab: sketchfab.com/models/a37fcb547…
Some assets I made for a little game project.
Models/Render are done in Maya. Grass is done in Maya´s paint effects.

Rikku
From Final Fantasy X/X-2!!
It was a lot of fun drawing her, especially her face.
I wanted to create a kind of hot-summer-day-feeling, so I spend a lot of time with the lighting!

Midna - Process
This tutorial was inspired by the awesome artist tsuaii.
Check out his process of Terra: tsuaii.deviantart.com/art/Terr…

sketch - Rough sketch to work out the line art from. Take your time finding a pose you like.

lines - Line art based on the sketch. I work a lot with masks in Photoshop. So I masked out every part of the scene with a different mask for quick selecting the parts later. - head, helmet, arms, legs, cloth, hair etc... this may take a while, but it gives you more control over your Painting later.

ambient occlusion - Here comes the interesting part. Make a new layer and only paint in the shadows in the niches between objects. Think of the cracks where the ambient light of the scene can't easily bounce into. I used my selection masks from before A LOT in this process (use a large soft brush and paint just outside the selection mask to create some soft transitions). Also use a light gray color and don´t get too carried away in the process, since you don´t want to paint the actual shadow right now.

flat colors - Make a new Layer (hide the AO Layer) and only Paint in the basic colors of your scene. My mask are again very helpful for assigning colors quickly.

ambient occlusion + flat colors - Place your AO Layer above your flat colors and set the layertype to multiply. Your Painting should now look somewhat like a 3D Model. You see the flat colors get some shading from the AO layer. The effect may seem a little underwhelming at first, but it gives you great control over the overall look of the painting. You can change the brightness of the AO layer, or just some parts of your Painting and see how it changes. Sometimes I just copy the AO Layer which further enhances the effect. Just play around the brightness/opacity until it suits your needs.

lighting - Define a light source and paint the areas where light bounces to. I love using the Overlay layertype or Vivid light layertype for this. Also give your light some color. Not just white. For higher contrast you can also paint some shadows and strenghten your AO layer.

post-production - Merge all your Layer into one and do some fine tuning. Color grading, blur, effects, lens flare, lighting adjustments give your painting the final touch. I used the liquify tool to reshape Midnas head. It´s a great tool, if you messed up your lineart and diddn´t fixed it at the beginning lol. You shouldn´t overuse it though (since it blurs the parts you change) and get your proportions right at the beginning xD

Fan art of Midna from Twilight Princess

I tried out a new painting approach. Basically you paint in an ambient occlusion layer, which gives you more control over the shadows and adds an realistic lighting.
Huge thanks to tsuaii who I learned this technique from!!
I´ll also upload the process.
